How old are you?

Birthdays. Age. Does anyone else practice their new age before their birthday? I do. This is definitely not an age thing. I have done this for years (honestly). The problem is that you start to question how old you actually are. Ok maybe not everyone does this but definitely some people do. Don’t they? Don’t you?

March

Every March I am marching towards being officially a year older. My birthday is at the end of the month but I definitely start to consider my age at the start of March. I am not the biggest fan of birthdays so I have done this since I was, oooh, late 20s. Actually I liked being 18 and didn’t mind getting to 21. After that I figured it was just another day. Maybe stubbornly so. That is probably an Aries thing ;-). Maybe it was more because the men I had relationships were complete arses…thing. Either way I have never been the biggest fan of birthdays. Another day and, oh joy, another year.

Space and Time

I have a problem at the start of every year. I forget what year it is. And in a similar way I try and start practicing my new age at the start of each March then get confused as to what age I actually am. This has only once caused me serious embarrassment during a court hearing (a work thing). I think they just thought I was mental though which was very beneficial to me :-).

Space and time seem to clash around my birthday. Do I need to be a year older? Do the men I fancy need to be older or am I ok just liking who I like? Why has my face not yet fallen off and therefore why do I still look (seriously!!) at least 7 years younger? Should I start lying about my age? Do I actually know my age? For fucks sake can we not just pause….a good age….a good look….a definite good time…..

How Old?!

Ah whatever. I will be 43 in two weeks. So currently I am 42. I do need to repeat this as I keep practicing 43. I get confused. It is not an age thing and not a Malbec thing!! I have done this for years and it happens every year. Don’t you? How old are you?

  1. I will be 46 in two weeks and I couldn’t care less. I have no one to please but myself and since I’ve managed to distance myself from visual cues ie I don’t care much for fashion and even less for makeup, I have no interest in what someone looks like or their age. I want to know what they are inside.

That said I don’t have all the trappings of the people around me who are my age, so I still have a younger outlook. I do my own thing and it wouldn’t matter if I was 46 or 66 I’d still be living my life this way.

35 was my favourite age. I had finally got a handle on life and accepted who I was. My perspective has gone up and down a bit since then, but I THINK I have finally settled on who I am and how I want to live, within reason. It’s not perfect, but then nothing ever is and my age has little to do with how my life will be going forward.

Acceptance is hard. We are so brutal to ourselves and there is nothing to blame for that other than the way society treats us and makes us view ourselves.

    1. Thanks for the comment. It’s great that with age we get a handle on things (I agree early 30’s for me too) and become comfortable. I am totally comfortable in all the trappings that I enjoy, laugh at and even forget – which includes what age I am every year 😊.
It’s great to hear how others choose to and enjoy life! Thanks for sharing and happy birthday when it comes. We both have our birthdays at the same time so I will raise a glass in our honour 🙏

      1. And to you. It’s only been a recent transition for me. I have spent many years worrying about age, how I look etc etc. It’s definitely an age thing, where you reach a point where other people’s opinions just don’t matter any more. Enjoy your birthday and we can chink glasses over the internet!

  2. As a runner I occasionally walk a little funny the day after a long run. Only recently did it dawn at me that when my legs are tight and I walk funny, my graying hair makes me look a lot older than I am.
I definitely don’t feel 20 something anymore but I’m not sure I feel 55 either.
55 has been a good age, but my Dad is gone and my Mom is 91. And my running injuries seem to be catching up to me!
48 was a good year. Everyone was alive and healthy and my girls were still at home.

    1. Age is a funny thing isn’t it. I am not sure how old I feel either. When I was 18 I am sure I was more mature than I am now. I also had a great Versace dress that I still have and don’t think I will ever get into (clearly it’s only my boobs that have got bigger as I will ignore the increase in my backside) 😂.
Injuries are a definite one I notice more but I do wonder if we just notice them more and are more careful as we get older. I used to think nothing of going horse riding when I couldn’t walk with a disc injury. Now I try and avoid the injuries so I choose more wisely with fitness (sort of).
Mortality is a difficult one too. I’m probably in the phase you were before 48 but there’s no stopping time. Enjoy your 55th year and here’s to the next one 🙏❤️😊

  3. I just turned 38 in April and am eagerly yet nervously approaching my 40’s. I definitely don’t quite feel 38. I think I feel closer to 30 most days. But sometimes I feel about 50, lol. I injured my back two years ago and am still feeling the effects of it, which makes me feel old as heck sometimes, lol. But I’m still in the single, childless, working phase of life which makes me feel younger.

    1. Age is such a funny thing…I’m similar I feel younger but sometimes older 😊.
I feel you with the back thing…I had an injury around 30 and it was a good year or so until i got back to feeling fully fit again. Thanks for the comment 👍😊
